This is a reprint. A photo that i have used on the old picture of the day site, but i thought it might be kind of cool to use this image to kick off the new section of the coffee black site, and to kick off the new format for picture of the day. rather just a picture sporadically posted, i will post them weekly, but each post will have a song that i think goes nicely with the photo.
This photo is the last photo i took of my grandma rangel. after snapping this photo, i hopped on my motorbike and made my way back to ohio. we lost grandma later that year, just after christmas. one of the reasons i really would like to get off the provervial fence about what i really believe is the hope that grandma and her lifelong buddy aunt marion (who we lost earlier this year) are still around somewhere… playing cards, drinking port wine, and laughing about harder times.
I picked this song for a few reasons. i can still hear this song in my head, playing on my grandma’s stereo when their friends would stop by and the house would smell like percolated coffee, pall malls, and scotch.
Last year, when my brother made a video tribute to grandma, and included this song in the closing scene. so fitting, and so cool.
Let me know if the photo or the song stirred up any memories for you guys.

I hate to say it, but I actually got a little choked up reading this.
I love the idea of the songs and the photos… i know you love both.

Good luck on your weekly pic & a song goal! Being the fair-skinned white girl I am, the only thing I can relate with in this story are the pall malls. If I had a song to add, it would be the theme song from the Young and the Restless . . . or Jokers Wild. Grandma loved daytime tv!

Beautiful. I remember this pic from the old site. And your grandma looks so familiar to me. Probably saw her around town or in the grocery store, the post office or something. Good luck, and I think the song is a beatiful and loving tribute to her memory.

Sergio and Diego,
Fabulous tribute! Thank you for putting them together I see your grandpa at a weekly breakfast at a local mom ‘n pop eatery. A few cousins put on the feedbag as he listens joyfully. Your uncle Mike is famous for keeping the family gatherings together, in Ventura that is. Next time you guys make it out, give a holla. We’ll be waiting for you at that small joint having rancheros and pan dulce. Coffee’s on me! Hey to you too Leslie.

Great idea Serge, I feel I know a bit about your Grandma now. Looking forward to later pics and tunes. I think I’ll share this with QMSD.

Dear Sergio,
To me, your picture(s) and song(s) represent a striking fact, which is this: you attach the words “black” and “white” to your photography business, yet you view the world as anything but black and white. I think your eye, and the head and heart behind your eye, view the world and people in all the colors and nuances which life truly represents.
